Since starting Ovi and Reu I’ve become so much more aware of the vast body of superb writing and documenting of life that exists out there on the web and especially the work of other women. I’m just about the right age to remember those hazy, slow-paced days before Google, when you had to do your homework by looking something up in the Children’s Britannica or, if you were really snazzy, on Encarta. In the (really not so) old days you’d have to find yourself a printed publication to read something erudite, witty or challenging. But these days there is an incredible wealth of great material available at the click of a button, or the swipe of a finger.
We have to read a lot of blogs to keep up to date with the world of modern motherhood; it’s definitely one of the perks of our job that it’s technically ‘work’ to sit down with a cup of tea and a list of blog titles for an hour of reading great and inspiring writing, looking at amazing photography and sharing experiences with other women out there. Some of them are mothers, others aren’t, and it doesn’t really matter to us, because part of our ‘thing’ at Ovi and Reu is that motherhood is not always a defining feature of who you are. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes it is the one and only thing that defines us; at two in the morning when you’re rocking a tiny screaming person back to sleep (again) it’s hard to remember that there are any other facets to your life… but at other times it’s gratifying to remember that there’s a whole world out there - and blogs are the perfect means of keeping a toe in the water of the big wide world beyond the nursery walls.
So maybe you don’t get to call it work, but when you next get a second, take a look at some of our favourite blogs and feel inspired, challenged, informed, amused…
Here’s a list of some of our faves:
